After sporting “Vegas Gold” for the majority of the Crosby-Malkin era, things are looking bright for a “Pittsburgh Gold” movement. While many fans have been crying for the Penguins to return to their classic gold, or “yellow” as some fans like to call it, now is the perfect time for the Penguins to return to Pittsburgh gold for good.
In 1992, just as the Penguins were celebrating their second consecutive Stanley Cup Victory, the team shocked the league and unveiled new jerseys. The team introduced a new logo, dubbed the “Flying Penguin.” With these jerseys came a third jersey introducing grey into the Penguins color scheme. Many Penguins fans called for the original logo to return. The skating Penguin returned over 10 years later, but with a new color scheme. The Penguins introduced Vegas Gold, a color which many fans were displeased with.
The Penguins currently wear Vegas Gold as their primary color, though it’s looking more and more like the Penguins will return to Pittsburgh gold. Last season, after ditching their horrendous dark blue third jerseys, the Penguins unveiled a new third jersey. This jersey payed homage to the 1992 jerseys, which were a fan favorite. Looking almost identical to the 1992 jersey, fans all across the league were amazed at just how beautiful the jerseys were.
Pittsburgh gold is everywhere now. For the playoff hype this year, everything that involves the Penguins is in Pittsburgh gold. Playoff t-shirts come readily available in Pittsburgh gold, ads all over facebook and twitter are in Pittsburgh gold, even @nhl is tweeting pictures of the Penguins in Pittsburgh gold. This year during the playoffs, the Penguins will play all home games in their Pittsburgh gold jerseys, including a “gold rush” in which all fans will wear gold t-shirts with gold rally towels. For the Penguins 50th anniversary next season, the Penguins anniversary logo displays three Stanley Cups to represent the Penguins three Stanley Cup victories. Guess what color the logo was? Pittsburgh gold. It’s everywhere now!
Vegas gold is almost a thing of the past anyway. Stores everywhere have jerseys and t-shirts in Vegas gold up to at least 50% off. Even Pensgear is discounting the price on Vegas gold apparel. Why else would the team's primary jerseys be on sale? For a team that has some of the most marketable players in the league, why would they discount their top players jerseys? The answer is simple: The team is simply trying to get rid of these jerseys.
Sportslogos.net, run by none else than Chris Creamer, reported earlier this year that it was confirmed the Penguins were unveiling new jerseys for next season. SportsLogos.net is a very trustworthy site as they have proved in the past. They were able to confirm Toronto rebuffing their logo as well as reporting on the 50th anniversary logos. If Chris Creamer was able to confirm, not speculate or rumor but confirm, then this is great news for the Pittsburgh Gold Movement.
Plain and simple, fans love the Pittsburgh gold. Pittsburgh is iconic for all three of their sports teams sporting black and gold and it just hasn’t been the same with the Penguins wearing Vegas gold. The Pirates have just recently unveiled a new Sunday jersey and fans everywhere are loving the throwback. The Steelers have one of the most iconic uniforms in history, and without the rest of the city wearing it (aside for Pitt University), it just doesn’t feel right.
When it comes to social media, Penguins fans do have a voice. After the Penguins have used several lame goal songs such as Song 2, Zombienation, or the Hey Song, the fans of Pittsburgh wanted a new song. After a campaign for a new song, the Penguins finally listened and “Party Hard” was added as the new Penguins goal horn. This shows that the organization is listening and is willing to please our fans. With a movement as big as this, the voices of fans everywhere deserve to be heard. There is currently a Pittsburgh gold movement on twitter now and it is slowly gaining more support. The Penguins will always go out on the ice wearing black and gold, but it's possible that in the very near future they'll be wearing none other than Pittsburgh gold.
