The regular season is almost over in the league and in fantasy; if you use ESPN, Draftkings , or Yahoo fantasy. The fact is it's almost playoffs, and if you’ve been lucky drafted well and made plenty of adjustments you may have just made it. This is a wrap up of a few of the Penguins players and how their season has impacted fantasy.
Goalies: Let’s start with our baby Goalie Matt Murray, although mostly in minors this year except for a short amount of time in December when Fleury was out due to injury and his recent call up to be the main backup. Murray has been pretty good this season and has shown he has great potential to be a solid goaltender for the organization and for fantasy purposes in the future. Currently Murray is ranked second out of our current goalies including prospects. I look forward to seeing what a full year in the big leagues can do for him.
Next we have Fleury , or if you prefer the flower . Beloved by many for his personality not only has he carried the team more than a couple times, but he is a rock solid pick to be your fantasy starting goalie. Often overlooked for more popular goalies like Lundqvist or Bishop Fleury is just as solid as the former two. With a 92.2 percent save rate any fantasy player should keep him at all costs.
Defenseman : We have three defenseman that are worth picking up in fantasy if you can get your hands on them. First we have the trade off from arguably the trade no one saw coming, but almost everyone was happy about. Yes I’m talking about Trevor Daley. An improvement over the previous person who occupied that spot on the blue line Daley fits nicely into the Penguins system. Not huge for points but still consistent he isn't the worst option if your in need of a defenseman.
Next the second of the French Canadian pair the first being Fleury. Kris Letang , Letang had a slow start this season and a few people questioned what his issue was . It seems however after the coaching change his play picked up. We can’t say for certain that this is directly tied to his slow start but I have my suspicions. Letang is a Norris quality defenseman overlooked by many and by the league because he has more finesse than the likes of Roman Josi .Over the past five games he has four points. Letang is a defenseman to pick up in fantasy if you want someone who can slowly chip away consistent points for your team.
The last defenseman I want to analyze is young gun Derrick Pouliot arguably one of the future pieces on the blue line for the Penguins. Pouliot is averaging about 15 minutes a game and although he isn't heavy on scoring, he’s a solid defenseman who could blossom into a great player.
Forwards: Because we have so many talented forwards on the team I’m going to cover top 5 in stats one of whom we didn’t expect to be as good as he actually is.
Sidney Crosby, this is obviously the pick that is the most obvious choice. The captain is ranked 4th out of all forwards in the league and to spite a slow start , he got hot when it mattered at 28 years of age Sid is still playing like well Sid. If you have him in fantasy you’ve got yourself one hell of a center.
Evgeni Malkin, Another obvious choice the second half of the two headed monster Malkin has been hot all season easily in the top ten in forwards another solid center for a fantasy game. Sadly due to recent injure putting him out 6-8 weeks a fantasy owner may seriously want to consider if you should place him on IR or if it's better to simply drop him and pick someone up who can get you points while Malkin is out.
Next we have Hornqvist , another player who had a slow start , Hornqvist has been on fire lately notching ten points in the last nine games. A decent winger for any fantasy coach that wants to make a full run into the fantasy playoffs.
Finally our unexpected forward Baby Penguin Conor Sheary . I’ll be honest I wasn’t sure how he was going to play up in the big league, but I like many others am pleasantly surprised at his production and play. He takes opportunities when he’s given them and appears to have more scoring potential than originally thought. I’d keep my eyes on him for future acquisition for fantasy teams.
In summary these are just a few of the players’ seasons and how they stack up in fantasy. When you boil it down it’s about who’s available and personal taste. Now go out there are score some fantasy points.
